Bristol Bronze Club — Four-Day Workshop

Join us for a four-day, hands-on introduction to lost-wax bronze casting using the ceramic shell technique. Working in small groups ensures plenty of individual guidance and practical experience. Throughout the workshop, you’ll gain a complete overview of the foundry process while creating your own bronze sculpture.

No previous experience required — beginners and experienced makers are equally welcome. Whether you are starting from scratch or already an established sculptor or maker, you’ll leave with a wealth of new skills, knowledge, and confidence.

We begin with the fundamentals, using direct wax modelling, shaping wax much like clay or plasticine to create your original sculpture, which will ultimately be cast in bronze.

All materials are provided, along with a hearty lunch each day.

Workshop Outline

Day 1 — Introduction to Bronze Casting
Overview of the process, materials, safety, and an introduction to wax.
Begin developing your sculptural forms.

Day 2 — Mold Making & Wax Trees
Using silicone rubber molds, creating wax patterns, and beginning the ceramic shell investment.

Day 3 — Building Ceramic Shells & Casting Preparation
Continue building ceramic shell layers and prepare molds for burnout.
Introduction to burnout and casting processes, including guidance on casting at home.

Day 4 — Casting Day
Bronze pour, followed by fettling, chasing, patination, and finishing techniques.
Final works reviewed and displayed.

Tutor: David Snoo Wilson
